What the...EL? with Karin Wiebe
Meet the faces behind the Hotel Eldorado team and what keeps them smiling
Who: Karin Wiebe
What: Liquor Store Manager
Where: Born in Edmonton but views the Okanagan as home
Why: Location and Appearance of the Eldorado
Many Okanagan residents can attest to the beauty and vibrant lifestyle Kelowna offers. Karin has a similar view on the area as she holds a passion for the seemingly endless lakes and the long motorcycle season the region presents. Arriving to the valley when she was a young girl, Karin knew even though her family may not be settled here permanently, she would eventually call Kelowna home.
“The history, the ambiance, and the lake,” Karin explains what contributed to her application at the Hotel Eldorado nearly five years ago. Being previously employed at the Schloss Neuschwanstein Hotel in Germany and also at the Banff Springs Hotel, Karin had a well tailored image of what she wanted from a hospitality occupation in Kelowna.
Receiving her promotion to manager was an exciting transition for Karin and she fits the role seamlessly. It was throughout this period she felt truly able to put her creativity and innovative ideas to work. As a high energy individual Karin finds pleasure in the variety her position offers. Interestingly, Karin contrasts her inner vigour with a calm, mellow Van Morrison tune while at work- Into the Mystic. After finding her center, Karin knows how to handle her job in customer service and sales.
“Start with yes and work backwards,” is a line Karin uses often when handling her management position- an attitude instilled in every employee of the Eldorado. “Not only is this mentality important when dealing with guests but also when working together,” Karin emphasis the significance of teamwork. Noticing the respect between every member of the Eldorado staff, including the Nixon’s, Karin is both the first to offer assistance and she is continually thankful for a helping hand in times of need.
As the familiar face behind the counter at the El Liquor Store, you will be sure to catch Karin in a smile when you stop in. She may be pouring a sample, describing one of our sumptuous wines, or chatting with a regular, but she will always have time to help you discover the ideal beverage.
